—Numbers 23:20

Balaam and others discovered that you can’t bless what God has cursed, and you can’t curse what God has blessed! Proverbs 18:21 tells us, “Death and life are in the power of the tongue.” Solomon mentions the “tongue” nineteen times in Proverbs. He reveals that wholesome words are life and blessing, but negative, lying words cause ruin and affliction to the soul (Prov. 26:28).

In the New Testament we are instructed to “let your ‘Yes’ be ‘Yes,’ and your ‘No,’ ‘No,’” or, as we would say today, keep your answers to a simple yes or no (James 5:12). When someone asks for your opinion, it is often easy to tell everything you know about a person or a situation. “Did you hear about . . . ” or “Have you heard the latest on . . . ” or “What have you heard about . . . ” are questions commonly asked among ministers as they fellowship over a cup of coffee. I recall years ago hearing about a fellow minister who had fallen in a weak moment to an act of immorality. Because we were ordained in the same denomination, I knew his name would be brought up among groups of ministers. The Holy Spirit spoke to me and said, “I don’t want you to say one thing about this man . . . do not even engage in a conversation about him. He has asked for My forgiveness and is going through a restoration process. Leave the matter between him and Me!” From that moment on, I refused to hear, repeat, or listen to anything regarding this man. My conscience was clear toward him and God.
