Chapter Nine
“Are you ready for this, cat?” Gideon called out in the bedroom and pulled his skullcap into place, apprehension at the possible danger lurking ahead for his lover sat like a lead weight in his gut.
“Almost,” Mikah said, his voice coming from the guest bathroom.
Gideon still couldn’t believe Mikah had finally trusted him enough to share what had been holding him back. He smiled at the earlier memory of the other male’s hard body beneath his, the throaty sounds he’d uttered when he came. They’d made love twice before having to part to get ready for their mission.
Movement caught Gideon’s eye in the dresser’s mirror. Mikah stood at the sink, making the final passes over his scalp with a razor, the hard muscles of his back bunching and releasing. Even though he’d just had the other shifter less than thirty minutes ago, Gideon’s cock twitched at the sight. And it took every ounce of his will to stand there, watching, instead of marching through the open door, bending the male forward, and taking what belonged to him. Damn. He shook his head and swiped a hand over his face. Possessive much, wolf?
It was so hard to believe, in this day and time, the amount of homophobia the lion shifter had had to endure from his own parents. How the hell could anyone do that to their child? Except in Mikah’s case, his mother and father had never known the real person beneath their son’s exterior. What a horrendous loss on their part. Yet it was Mikah who, for years, had paid the highest price of them all with his happiness.
“Let’s do it.” Mikah strode back into the bedroom, tugging a sweater over his head. After grabbing his backpack from the bed, he joined Gideon at the bedroom door.
“You still sure about this?” Gideon couldn’t help but ask one more time. “This isn’t your battle to fight.”
Mikah’s gaze narrowed down at him. “The hell it isn’t.” Cupping Gideon’s nape, Mikah drew him closer. “I’m the one who found you after that asshole put a dart in you, remember?” His canines flashed, ratcheting Gideon’s pulse up a notch and heating his veins. “This is very personal,” Mikah snarled and dropped his hold. “Let’s get out of here and take the bastard out.”
Mikah turned and headed for the front door. Clearing his throat, Gideon followed. No, Mikah’s reaction hadn’t been sexy as hell at all. Now if he could only keep Mikah from playing the hero out there and getting himself killed.
On their walk toward the edge of town, Gideon spotted Theo as expected, lingering in the shadows between two dwellings. Quietly, they changed course and met up with the other shifter.
“Is everything in place?” Gideon rubbed his palms together in an attempt to ward off the cold night air.
Theo nodded. “The team is in place.” His cousin tapped Mikah with his gaze. “You two will need to split up. One of you take the north end of woods outside the pack grounds, and the other should head south.
