Chapter fifteen
LUKE
âLucas.â A hand shook my shoulder. âLuke . . .â
My eyes flickered open, but I was convinced I was in a dream.
Sitting on the edge of my bed was the most gorgeous alarm clock Iâd ever seen: Lacey. Unfortunately, searing pain in my skull brought me right back to reality. My hand slapped my head, and I lifted the covers back over my face. Lacey giggled as she pulled them back down.
âI brought you Aspirin and Pedialyte.â
I groaned. âIâm dying.â
âI figured.â
I sat up and took her hangover remedy. Last night hadnât hit her as hard as me, as she appeared to be unfazed by the beers sheâd had. There was no way I hadnât doubled her intake. I was going to pay for it this morning.
âYouâre up early.â
âRachel and I got a spot on the beach. Justin went to get us some greasy sandwiches, but the traffic is already nuts.â
Greasy food sounded perfect, but it could wait. Lacey was practically in my bed right now. I set my beverage on the nightstand and looped one arm around her waist to pull her in closer.
She squealed and giggled but caved and curled herself into me.
Last night was a lot between her birthday and Tiffany hunting me down. I wanted her to know that I still had every intention of making today about her. Every single moment we had shared since her return had come to this day. I was so in love with her I couldnât see straight, and last night was the first time sheâd let her guard down to show me she was feeling the same.
I spun the bracelet on her wrist, enjoying the fact that she was still wearing it today. She had paired it with a black swimsuit cover-up and a sun hat that was now somewhere on the floor. As much as I wanted to see what was under the ensemble, I kept my hands where she could see them. We needed to talk before making any sort of move. I needed her to say out loud that she was feeling the same. And although Justin wanted me to tell her the truth about the day my mom left, I wasnât ready, and neither was she. It would ruin her day.
âHappy birthday.â
âThank you.â
If the door to the beach house hadnât opened, I could have stayed right where we were all day. Justin yelled about having breakfast on the beach and shut the door again. Lacey sighed, and while doing so, clutched me tighter. His timing was terrible.
âWeâre going to talk today,â I told her.
Her smile was playful as she sat up. âAbout?â
She knew what it was about and had me mirroring her expression. I took it as a yes. We were definitely on the same page. I wanted to kiss her right now, and I was sure sheâd let me. But if we didnât get down to that beach, our friends were bound to show up looking for us.
âI suppose I could make time in my day to .
