With this context, let’s have a look at some examples of mental fusions supporting the habit of pornography use.
Peter fused his use of porn to being 'a safe alternative to sleeping around'. As the son of a Christian minister he didn't want to join his mates in immorality, so justified his use of porn with this mental fusion.
Adam, whose mother had serious illness when he was quite young was desperate for motherly nurture and comfort. As quite a young boy he discovered porn and in the pre-adolescent stage developed the habit of regularly going to pornographic images of naked breasts for comfort. For him, at this young age, it was not sexual, it was about comfort. And so his brain fused porn to comfort. Adam and his wife came to us early in their marriage after she had discovered his addiction and been quite wounded by it. It was no comfort whatsoever to her that his addiction was nothing to do with any lack in her. As a grown man why did he now go to porn ... for comfort? The brain supported the habit.
Alistair justified his use of porn because by using it, along with masturbation, he found he could keep his thought life far more respectful toward female staff members he worked with. Once he'd 'done his thing with porn' he didn't find himself undressing female staff members with his eyes. Alistair had fused porn to self-control. This sounds so bizarre, but once again, the brain supported the habit.
Peter and Fred had both fused porn to relaxation and de-stress.
... and so the list can go on.
