A heavy dread settles on Thea the closer they get to the compound. It may just have been a rushed shopping trip to Hereford, but the few hours away from Court and having to think about what's going on between them was just what she needed. Spending that time with Davyn hadn't been too much of a hardship either. Even if he had been less than thrilled about spending the time with her.

As with the journey to Hereford, he hadn't said anything on the way back. His comment about chestnuts had been the last thing he said, but Thea doesn't mind. His silent company is strangely comforting.

'Davyn?'

'What?'

'Do we have to go back to the compound straight away?'

'Yes.'

Thea looks over at Davyn. 'I've been cooped up in there for the last two days. I just want to get some fresh air.'

'You've just had fresh air. You're a target. I need to get you back.'

'I'm just asking for another five minutes away from all this mess.' She points out the window. 'The river is just there. Please, Davyn. Just five minutes.'

He drums his fingers on the steering wheel then curses and turns the car around. He drives through the narrow entrance to the car park and shuts off the engine. 'Five minutes. That's it.'

She opens the door, climbs over the gate, and shimmies down the mud bank to the small beach at the side of the river. Thanks to the recent rain, the river is quite full, sending the water rushing around the bend as it makes its way downstream. She sits on a fallen tree trunk lying on the beach and watches the bats darting through the trees, searching for bugs to eat.

This is exactly what she needs. She knows Davyn is somewhere behind her but right now she couldn't care. Right now she just wants to forget everyone and everything.

She opens her eyes when she hears Davyn stopping beside her. The large vampire looks completely out of place in this setting. His hands are jammed in the pockets of his jeans and he keeps looking around, like he's expecting a surprise attack from a deranged owl.

'This is heaven. Thank you. I guess I'm just finding all this a little hard to adjust to. Up until a few days ago it was just me and Court. Now there's the Blackjacks and the True Order and... my father...' She closes her eyes and stops before she makes a complete fool out of herself. 'Sorry. I didn't mean to offload.'

Nothing from the stoic vampire so Thea gives up trying to convince him to talk. After a few minutes of looking at his leg she finally breaks. 'Are you going to sit or just stand there like a bodyguard.'

'I am your bodyguard.'

'Can you please just sit?'

He lowers on to the tree beside her and leans forward, resting his arms on his legs as he continues to scan their surroundings. In the quiet, the enormity of the revelation about who her father is, hits her. They'd talked like brother and sister.
