Chapter 7

She was quietly freaking out. Daisy hadn’t realized how unnerving it would be to sit in dragon form in front row seats in a packed arena. She’d never been a super social girl, and her skin itched from all the eyes on her. Shozan, Breaker and her family were there, and her mother was the only one in human form. Lucy was seated next to Malcolm’s relaxed form, and by rights, she should have been the one nervous about all the big bodies surrounding her. Instead, Lucy seemed excited and happy to be there, looking at the bright dragons with interest, probably composing a painting in her head.

She even smelled happy.

Daisy wished she could be half as Zen. Her anxiety rose in a sharp cloud around her, and it was all she could do not to tuck her head in her paws and hide.

“Easy, pet.” Breaker touched his giant muzzle to her jaw, soothing with his touch. “You’re shaking. Is it the crowd, or being in an arena?” When she stared at him, he explained, “I roared at you in a large courtyard, and you were transformed in a large, round open space.”

She stared at the arena with new eyes. Oh. “I didn’t think of that. Um…I’m not sure.” Later she would wonder how he considered such a thing and be duly impressed, maybe a bit scared by his insight. Right now it was all she could do to take deep breaths and not black out. Had changing traumatized her that much? It had been the worst pain of her life. For a while there, she’d also been afraid she’d be stuck in a monstrous half form.

He made a soothing noise and moved closer, while Luke pressed against her other side. It helped, and gradually her muscles loosened.

Shozan casually glanced over as the scent of fear subsided, but did nothing to draw attention to her.

As her panic eased, she was able to pay attention to the festivities. There were aerial dances and combat, speeches and performances. Malcolm was publicly honored as the oldest living dragon, and a list of the fifty oldest dragons was read and gifts given to elders, and then the dragons flew to the valley where they mostly assumed human form and enjoyed the bounty from the booths that had sprung up.

By the end, Daisy was exhausted. It wasn’t only her panic attack, it was the constant socialization. She wasn’t a social butterfly, and it put her in a dark mood. “I don’t want to meet people today,” she told Breaker. “I’d like to walk around with my mom without talking about our engagement.”

Breaker considered her silently. “You realize word has already gotten out?”

She shook her head. “Doesn’t mean I want to be on display. I need space today.”

His eyes narrowed in concern. “Do you need to return to your apartment?”

“I just need space,” she said firmly, and walked away. Realizing what she’d done, she stopped and turned. “Not from you; other people. You can be with me if you want.
