Other forms of breathwork that activate the parasympathetic nervous system (pranayama, coherent) are also useful in helping consciously regulate the traumatized nervous system but do not always address well-encapsulated (highly defended) areas of trauma. This can lead to well-controlled states of peace at the price of passion and full empowerment. The judicious use of both slower than normal and faster than normal breathing maximizes the chances of recovering full potential. The caution with Therapeutic Breathwork is the possibility of a flooding of the limbic system without resolution, which is tantamount to retraumatization. This is why training is required in its usage that is both technical and personal. The clearer the breathworker is concerning their own trauma that may have produced blind spots for them, the less likely they are to miss the signals of the client around their triggers. Fortunately, the course of trauma treatment is over a period of time that allows for adjustments and can be very forgiving, given the goodwill and commitment of practitioner and client. Even my miscalculations or blind spots have led to great healing when I have owned them and engaged in an honest dialogue that provided a new model of relationship healing for the client. For example, earlier in my career, having strongly encouraged a client to express anger before they were fully ready but then recognizing this, I was able to apologize and work through what could have been another overwhelming experience with an authority figure for the client. Healing came out of my “mistakes” (i.e., talking too loudly, being too animated, pressing my client to express, or myself expressing the feelings my client was afraid at that point to express) as long as I, the practitioner, was able to own them and work through them with the client. Again, when you are practicing this form of breathwork, you have to be aware, sensitive, and boundaried as well as operating within one’s scope of practice in your respective profession (i.e., getting adequate training).
