WHEN THE BLEEDING WON’T STOP IF YOU LET GO OF THE PRESSURE

If the bleeding stops with pressure but starts back up when you release, even after holding for five to 30 minutes, apply a pressure dressing. The bleeding may restart because of one of the following reasons:

1. The person may have a bleeding disorder, or

2. The person may have ingested food or medicine (even days before) that can affect clotting time. Some examples are:

• blood thinners, such as Plavix or Coumadin

• aspirin

• any nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs), such as ibuprofen, naproxen and others, which can prolong bleeding a bit but not as much as aspirin

• certain herbs, such as garlic, ginger, ginkgo, and feverfew

• fish oil

• vitamin E
