CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

T hough nervous—the man was half-naked for Jove’s sake, and she was in her father’s house— Melanie turned and plastered a calm mask on her face. Her heart stuttered at the sight of the solid wall of his chest and the ridges of his abdomen. His shoulders drew back as she was running her palm over his skin.

Stopping a foot away from him, Melanie tilted her head up to meet his eyes, “You are the farthest thing from scary. Unhealthy for my heart, but not terrifying.”

His lips twitched, “Unhealthy for your heart.”

Reaching for the shirt, Melanie unfolded it with trembling fingers, and stepped behind Andrew to help him put it on. As he buttoned it, she reached for the cravat and painstakingly tied into a napoleon fall.

“There,” she said as he put the waistcoat on. “My heart is safe now.”

“If only you knew how hard I’m fighting the temptation to kiss you,” Andrew murmured, while tucking the necktie right—and instantly, her heart began to race.

Dratted man.

Reaching for the dinner jacket resting on top of a bag, Melanie held it out for him. He slid it on, and Melanie smoothed his shoulders.

“Resist temptation,” she murmured.

“I can’t,” Andrew said, his lips claiming hers in a passionate embrace, an act that plucked up all the loving desire she no longer had to hide.

She was on the tips of her toes before she knew it and kissed him back, loving how the full span of his hands framed her nipped-in waist and rested on her hipbones. Gripping his hair for better purchase, Melanie met his tongue with parries of her own.

But with a sigh, she pulled away, “Not here.”

Lips slanting, Andrew stepped away, and bushed his knuckles over her cheek, “I know, but I don’t regret it. You’re breathtaking, sweetheart. Plum looks lovely on you.”

Brushing her hand down the bodice of the square-necked, plum and gray watered silk, Melanie smiled, “Thank you. Erm…oh, Father went out to Cambridge this morning, in case you wanted to speak with him. He’ll be back tomorrow.”

Nodding, Andrew held out his arm, “Shall we?”

Taking his arm, they left the room to meet Miss Davis in the lobby. Clad in her stately grays and greyed hair in a matronly bun, the woman Melanie regarded as her mother smiled at them with both her mouth and her eyes, over the half-moon of her spectacles.

“Good day, My Lord,” Miss Davis nodded. “I suppose My Lady and I are taking the carriage while you ride?”

“Yes, Miss Davis,” Andrew said, “I’d love to ride with you, but I have to take my horse home as I’ll be needing him tomorrow.”

The carriage was ready for them, and after Miss Davis was helped in, Andrew’s firm hands grasped her warmly as she stepped in. Before she could pull away, he kissed the back of her glove, winked and closed the door behind her. Peeking through the window, Melanie watched him mount the horse with a poise of royalty.

“You love him, don’t you, My Lady?” Miss Davis asked.
