I paced the kitchen like a caged werepanther waiting for them to return. I could feel Piper’s panic when Ren pulled her under the water. It felt like daggers pushing into my flesh, and I wanted nothing more than to race to her side and pull her to safely. Not that she was in any true danger. Ren would have never let anything happen to her, but still this need to protect her was nearly overpowering to me.

I dreaded what was to come, but the others were right. We needed to prepare her body. Wielding magic was not for the weak of heart or body.

My spirits rose as I sensed their approach. Minutes later, a weary and battered-looking Piper entered the great dining hall with Ren trailing closely behind. I could tell she was not in the best of moods as she plopped down in one of the chairs.

“Are you all right?” I ventured.

“Just peachy,” she replied. “Considering I nearly drowned.”

“No, you didn’t,” said Ren matter-of-factly. “Actually, you did exceptionally well. I was impressed.”

I could tell Piper wanted to smile at the compliment but instead pinched her lips together in a mock frown.

“I am going to go and draw you a healing bath,” Ren said, heading out the door.

“A bath?” Piper said, stopping him in his tracks. “I just spent what felt like hours in that water. My body feels pretty good. Do I really need a bath after that swim?”

“The bath is not to recover from us,” Ren said smiling. He looked from Piper to me and nodded before continuing out the door.

“What did he mean by that?” Piper asked.

“Piper, we each have a role to play in your training,” I said. “Ren and I are here to get your body in shape. It is our job to make sure that you are physically ready to handle magic. It will be Brayne’s job to get your mind in shape so that you are able to resist the mental tricks the vampire will undoubtedly attempt to use on you. That part of your training will begin tomorrow night. Today is all about your body.”

“And Colt? What part in my training will he play?”

I winced at her words. She wasn’t ready to hear about that, and I did not have the strength to tell her the world of pain Colt would have to subject her to. “Colt’s specialty is the cornerstone of the magic you will be using. It is best to leave the explanation to him.”

I walked over to the wall that contained an array of weapons and motioned for Piper to join me.

“Why do gargoyles need weapons?” she asked, taking in the assortment of blades and staffs.

“We have no use for them. They, like everything else in this house, was here when we arrived. They have never been touched before now.” I lifted one of the wooden staffs from its holder and spun it lightly in my hands. Although I had never used it, it felt strangely familiar to me.
