Chapter 8

Brec

As I lead Xanthe down the stairs to her car, I can feel her tremble. It’s clear how she feels about the little girl, but now that she’s stable, her doctor informed us the sedatives will ensure Mara won’t be conscious until morning.

All thoughts of playful banter and sex are pushed to the back of my mind, for all I can think about is if Xanthe’s alright. When we get to her car, I take her to the passenger side and help her in. She frowns, but doesn’t fight me. The drive home is a silent one, in which Xanthe wipes away soundless tears.

We walk quietly to the elevator and inside I just hold her as she weeps. I’m already wondering what I can do to help—food? A warm bath again? Humans seem to like wine at times like this…—when a strange scraping sound reaches my ears. Then what sounds like footsteps. Voices.

The closer we get to the penthouse, the louder it gets and the more alert I become. Xanthe’s experienced enough pain today. If there’s anyone here with the intent to hurt her, they won’t live to see another second.

The doors open on dozens of men moving furniture and Kiera in the middle of them all, holding her belly up as she struggles to walk around.

She spins around at their entrance, her face going from frustrated to annoyed. “Brec! You’re home too soon! Leave again!” she demands, but then she sees Xanthe, tear stained and wiped out. “Everyone out!” she orders, and all the people drop what they’re doing and go to the balcony outside to await further instructions. Kiera waddles to Xanthe and takes her in her arms with a fierce glare at me. “What did you do, you big oaf!” she hisses at me as she pets Xanthe’s hair. Xan has completely melted down now, sobbing loudly against Kiera, just as the elevator dings again and Adam and Mateo walk in.

“Handle your brother, Adam, before I do,” Kiera barks, and the look she gives me feels as if she's throwing daggers into my chest. She guides Xanthe out of the room with a fierce glance for all three of us men.

“What did you do?” Adam asks, shocked, as Mateo starts laughing.

“If I know Brec at all, whatever he did he doesn’t know he did it!” Mateo says over his shoulder as he pushes a cart of brand new women’s clothes past us and into my bedroom…where there’s now a four-post bed draped with white curtains and other various furniture scattered around.

“I didn't do anything, Adam,” I tell my brother, and his face softens. “There's a little girl she cares about, she’s very sick. She almost died tonight.”

Adam puts his hand on my shoulder and squeezes. “Human emotions can be absolutely wild before they change. Once she’s one of us, she’ll be much better at processing things and less weepy.”

“I don't want her to be anything less…” I say as I look at the hallway they disappeared down.
