Chapter 19

Grant

Monkey and Jimmy Chew zipped across my backyard, two white blurs zigzagging over green.

Harper yipped even louder than the dogs and ran after them, her arms in the air.

In the Adirondack chair next to me, Ada laughed. Her rich brown hair caught the setting sun, bouncing orange off of her. My hands tingled to touch her.

Looking away, I took a sip of my lemonade. The last two days had been hard.

I couldn’t be mad at Ada for being on the fence. I was just as back and forth about the two of us. We were polar opposites. How could we ever learn to meet in the middle?

Still, the connection when it came to the important things was there.

We both prioritized Harper. And we shared a mind-blowing chemistry. In addition to her beauty, she had so many traits I admired in a woman. She was strong, independent. Smart.

The pride that was sometimes an asset was a big problem, though. I had more to offer than my dedication to Harper and my insatiable lust for Ada.

I had resources. More than I needed for myself.

Letting Ada and Harper become homeless in a couple of weeks wasn’t an option. There seemed to be no way around Ada’s stubborn attitude, though.

A stubborn attitude that I still couldn’t help but respect. A stubborn attitude that made me want her more.

Not only her body. Her time. Her smiles.

Which was probably insane. She didn’t trust me.

Could I trust her? She was so flighty. What promise would there be of her not running out the door at the first sign of uncertainty?

Out of the corner of my eye, I saw her stretch her long, tanned legs out. A vision of the ass at the top of those legs flashed across my mind, and I stifled a groan.

I knew what Lucas would say. That I should call someone up.

A girl to take out. Spend a night with. It would help get my mind off Ada.

Except I already knew that plan wouldn’t work. Since Harper and Ada’s arrival in my life, everything was different. The thought of being with a woman while Harper and Ada were next door made my stomach sick.

And taking a woman to a hotel didn’t feel right, either. I would want to be back home, spending time with my daughter.

And her mother.

Talk about a shift in priorities. Instead of living at work like I used to (and sometimes sleeping there), I zipped through all my tasks as quickly as possible in order to get home early. I still hadn’t been able to pick Harper up from school, but that was next on my list.

My phone beeped on the side table, and I picked it up. An Instagram notification. I must have forgotten to turn those off.

Because the notification was for Arthur Lee’s account, I swiped to check it out. Someone had liked my post about our beef coming from local farms to the corresponding Arthur Lee’s restaurants.

And that had been the only person.

I frowned. What the hell?

Arthur Lee’s was a popular chain.
