Digestive System

The digestive system includes the entire alimentary canal and several accessory organs (Fig. 12.11).

Alimentary Canal

The alimentary canal begins at the (1) oral cavity (mouth) and continues as the (2) pharynx, (3) esophagus, (4) stomach, and (5) small intestine; it ends as the (6) large intestine, which terminates as the (7) anus. Anatomy and positioning of (1) the oral cavity through (5) the duodenum are covered in this chapter. The remainder of the small intestine, (6) the large intestine, and (7) the anus are discussed in Chapter 13.
