“SO HER PARENTS WANTED her to marry Gage Flanagan...” Xander muttered.

It’d been a week since Joel learned Gage was connected to Lea and her family. “They’re grade-A assholes, it seems.”

“See, this is why I’m not entirely upset I haven’t met my mate. What if I want to tear her family into shreds? I mean, I can’t exactly do that without upsetting her.”

“That’s some dark shit, Z.”

Xander shrugged, his eyes shut as he rested on the office couch—a couch Lea and Joel almost broke in before she bent over the desk. Her pretty ass high in the air... Her sex wet and ready for him...

Xander gagged, drawing Joel’s attention. “Either you have some fucked-up fantasies or you quit listening to me. Think you can tone it down over there? You’re stinking up my office with your arousal.”

Joel chuckled. “Remember all those meetings with Peter after we’d found Rosie? Jesus, that man had a one-track mind.”

“And you don’t?” Xander asked.

Joel paused, considering his words, and shrugged. “I guess it’s hard not to. My wolf isn’t exactly setting aside the topic of our mate.”

“Have you claimed her?”

Joel turned his attention toward Xander, but the beta still appeared to be asleep. “No.”

“There you go. Everything I’ve ever heard about true mates is things are super intense until you officially claim them.”

A few minutes of silence passed between them as he stared into space, Xander’s words spinning circles in his mind. The screen in front of him blurred, and his wolf huffed with the insistence he get to Lea and seal their status as mates.

“Did you find anything?” Xander asked, shifting to a seated position.

Joel peered from the screen to the beta, who leaned his forearms on his thighs. “I might have. There’s mention of a Black family in the suburb of Needham. I figured it would make sense Lea’s family was somewhere in Boston if they knew Gage somehow.”

“Does she know you’re looking for them?”

Joel ran a hand through his hair and sighed. “No. I wasn’t even sure if I could.”

Xander scoffed. “I’m not sure you’ve ever not found something or someone you were looking for. Why do you think Peter put you on to find Iggy?”

“And look how that shit turned out.”

Xander’s eyes flashed gold. “First off, you found him. Secondly, we can’t force anyone to do something they don’t want to.”

Joel shook his head. “That’s not what I mean. It was finding Iggy that led us to Gage and his showing up and seeing Lea. I still don’t feel right about how he watched her or me.”

Xander chuckled. “She’s your mate. Of course you didn’t like it.”

The memory of Gage calling Lea Leanna blurred his vision. “No, there was something off. I can’t explain it without you chalking it up to our possessive mate status.”

“You’ve got good instincts, so let’s assume you’re onto something. What do you think we need to worry about?” Xander asked.

Joel tossed his hands in the air in frustration. “That’s just it; I can’t figure that part out.
