The next day, Sabine chose a forest green velvet gown for her welcome feast. In a reversal of roles, Lady Colette came to help her prepare for the event.

“But my lady, I should be helping you, not you attending me,” protested Sabine.

“For what you have done in coming all this way, it is the least I can do. We must have you looking your best.” Colette put the finishing touches on her hair and placed a golden circlet over a gauzy veil on her head.

“I thank you.” Sabine smiled at her.

“You are not...disappointed in how things are different than you expected?” asked Colette.

“It is different, but I hope all will be well,” replied Sabine, thinking of Braden.

Colette smiled in return and led her to the great hall, where Laird MacLaren introduced Sabine in grand fashion. Many of the MacLaren clan had gathered, all eager to meet her. The hall glittered with her trimmings and bows. Sabine was particularly pleased with the kissing bows, except when she looked for them, they were gone.

Sabine scanned the room for the Master at Arms, but Sir Braden MacLaren was not present. Lady Aila linked arms with her and began the individual introductions to the MacLaren clan, many of them handsome men. Sabine tried to attend to her introductions, but she continued to search the crowd for Sir Braden. She waited. And waited.

Half way through the feast, realization dawned. Her shoulders slumped. Sir Braden was not coming. He was not interested in a marriage to a lady he had just met. He was not interested in her at all.

Sabine took a deep breath. There would be no Christmas miracle for her. No matter. She did not need to find true love. She just needed to find someone who didn’t drool.
