John Perrine, founder of Valparaiso, and his wife, Mary, are shown in the yard of their Eastview Avenue home. Perrine had first seen this region when he camped along Tom’s Bayou in 1890. Years later, he wrote, “I determined in those three never to be forgotten days . . . to some day make my home in what I knew was the real Vale of Paradise.” (FSA.)

Perrine’s development offered an unusual pyramid plan. Interested parties could purchase multiple lots and sell them to friends. The incentive was that they would then—theoretically—have the income from the properties they sold to cover their own living costs. (VR/WR.)
