Chapter Six
Real As It Gets
Two weeks had passed since Aretha and I had shared our experience together. I was getting worried that my actions had chased her off for good. I made several calls to her office, but she never returned any of my calls. Even Kendra seemed to be brushing me off whenever I called the office. Strangely enough, Trisha also had ceased calling me, as well. For a minute, I was worried about her, because I wasn't sure how serious Aliyah was about getting rid of Trisha. I was relieved when I saw her Suburban pass me one morning on I-20. She didn't look in my direction as she passed, so I figured she had decided to move on, which was a relief. Seeing Trisha eased my conscience about her safety. Things weren't on the up and up between Trisha and I, but I stilled cared for her as a friend. A major relief was that I didn't have Aliyah harassing me anymore either. From the way my life had been going over that past couple months, all the calmness seemed abnormal. In a sense, things had settled at just the right time. The Thanksgiving holiday was right around the corner, so I was glad to see that my holiday was going to have some settlement to it.
The Monday before Thanksgiving, I sat at my desk contemplating on whether I was going to take the ten-hour drive up to North Carolina. My grandmother had recently gotten out of the hospital, so I was leaning heavily towards driving up to see her. As I stared out into Atlanta's skyline, what I saw mirrored the exact way I was feeling. It was cold and gloomy. Heavy clouds hovered over the city and everything seemed dull. Everything that had color seemed as if it had been drained of its pigmentation. The absence of Aretha from my life provided my world with that same type of mood, dullness and emptiness.
I stared at the phone then picked it up. My fingers automatically punched the numbers to her cell phone. It rang once and I hung up. Depressed, my body flopped into the chair. If she hasn't answered in the last two weeks, what makes you think she'll answer now? I asked myself, burying my head into my arms. It was going to be a challenge getting Aretha out of my mind, but I had come to grips that she was gone and there was no coming back.
That afternoon when the elevator stopped on my floor, I stepped inside and sluggishly pushed the ground floor button. Even the elevator seemed like it was descending at a snail's pace as I waited for it to stop.DING!
Walking towards my car, I realized that the parking garage was oddly empty. Normally, there was continuous traffic flowing, but that afternoon everything was stagnant. When I pulled out from my parking spot, I noticed a red Jaguar accelerating rapidly in my rear view. As it got closer, the driver flicked the lights.
