CHAPTER 7

HAD I THOUGHT THE ROOM hot before? No, it was cold. Frigid. The last of the heat sapped away, out of my body and through the floor, leaving nothing behind.

“What...I don’t understand...” I stammered.

York took the book from my hands and closed it, keeping eye contact the entire time. I couldn’t keep mine in one place long enough to reciprocate. “I don’t either, but I’ve come to the conclusion that this book was meant for you.” Clearly, it wasn’t the answer he’d expected for himself.

“You knew this when you met me? When I told you my name?”

“I did. I just didn’t know if I could trust you.”

“I’ve never seen this...thing in my life. How could it be meant for me? Is this why you were stalling?” Was this why he hadn’t wanted me to take the Carlisle?

“Partly,” York admitted. “I wanted to try and get a read on you first, before I handed it over. This is a powerful magic artifact. I didn’t know you, or what type of person you are.”

I took a deep breath and let it out slowly. I could do this. I could do this. Oh, man, I didn't want to.

“Let me get this straight. You wanted to protect that from me?” I stifled a laugh to cover my sudden anxiety. I didn’t want York to see me start to unravel. “Ridiculous.”

“Well, now I can see it’s safe in your hands.” He held it out to me, then stopped. “Vienna, you have to understand. I don’t believe your grandmother should have the Carlisle. It’s just a feeling, and I don’t have any concrete facts to back this up. Please take a moment to consider what you’re going to do. I know I can’t keep this from you if you’re determined—”

I snatched the tome from his hands. “I’ll be fine, thank you. I’ve survived this long, Wolfie, and I’ll be kicking long after you’re gone. What I do is not up to you.”

“At least promise you’ll take some time,” he cautioned. “Maybe we can go out to eat again. I don’t know. Or take a walk.”

I stood in place because I wasn’t sure of my next move. I wasn’t sure what I should do. All my years of loyalty to my grandmother had to count for something. We’d been together since before I could remember, my childhood a blur. She’d been there for me when I needed someone to teach me how to live, how to eat, how to fight. She’d been there to offer me a position with the business venture she started. There was safety. Security.

And despite popular opinion, those were two very different things.

I wasn’t sure I could turn on Xanthe now, even for something as small as this. If I kept the book from her and she found out, it would be a massive betrayal. Still, I needed a little more time to figure out what exactly it was I was holding, and why my name was written on the first page.

“Take a minute,” York urged again.
