CHAPTER 10
Kelly had never expected a ride in a truck with two kids, a dog and a handsome man could be such crazy fun.
âWoooo! Woo! Woo!â Daisy howled from the backseat in tandem with Patch, howling to the music Seth played on the truckâs radio as he drove.
âMake her stop!â Todd begged, cupping his hands over his ears. âMake them both stop.â
Kelly glanced in the rearview mirror and smiled. Though he pouted, a smile tugged at Toddâs mouth and his eyes lit up with laughter. The goober was having a ball, but didnât want to admit it. It was a special Saturdayâthe first full day of spring breakâand the big fundraiser day was exactly one week away.
At the high-pitched sound of Daisy and Patchâs next round of howls, Seth joined in, tipping his chin up, meeting Daisyâs eyes in the rearview mirror and howling right along with her.
Kelly glanced between the two of them, the bright smiles on both of their faces making her heart turn over in her chest.
Last night, she had sat with Seth on his front porch under the stars for hours after heâd shared the details about Rachelâs death. Sheâd hugged him close and cried for his loss, grief and pain, and though he hadnât made a sound, sheâd felt hot tears roll down his cheek and onto her temple as sheâd rested her head against his chest. She hadnât looked up at himâit had seemed too private a momentâbut sheâd held on for as long as he allowed her. And, by eleven oâclock that night, heâd been the one to gently nudge her awake, offer a small smile and suggest she and the kids stay in one of his guest rooms for the night.
Sheâd been tempted to accept, but thought better of it. Something in his eyes, a lingering shadow, she supposed, had led her to believe he might be better off having his home to himself for the rest of the night. To have time to process what heâd shared and recover from the renewed grief heâd experienced, and that it might be better for him to do that without Todd and Daisyâs presence . . . and perhaps, even her own.
So sheâd gone inside, found Todd, Daisy and Patch sprawled on the sectional, sound asleep, and had reluctantly woken them. Seth had driven them back to their trailer and sheâd carried Daisy, who still slept, inside; then Kelly lingered outside of the door of the trailer as he left, watching the taillights of his truck fade into the dark night.
Kelly had stayed awake most of last night, staring at the ceiling, unable to think of much else than the distress in Sethâs eyes when heâd spoken of losing his daughter. Her heart had ached so much for him that hot tears had continued rolling down her cheeks most of the night.
Seth had shown up earlier than expected the next morning, preparing the part of the field they had marked off for the Moon Garden and unpacking the flowers from their plant holders, preparing to plant them.
