Chapter Nineteen

Devin

She stood close enough for Devin to take in her rich, floral aroma. He couldn’t help himself but breathe it in, forgetting for a moment that he loathed her. His mind reeled at the thought of her trickery, but his body held muscle memory, and those muscles remembered interacting with Froya in many pleasant variations.

“I was speaking the truth when I said I’ve missed you.” She swept a hand across his brow, petting him as though he was Thunderheart.

“Stop it, Froya, I mean it.”

“I don’t think you do.” She removed her hand. “I would take you back to the ranch world, but Juliana has flooded it. And there’s now an irreversible lightning storm shooting ley energy in all directions. I’d hate to see you get electrocuted.”

“You should be more concerned with the fact that I’ll be able to undo your freeze spell at any moment.”

“And then,” she said, touching her fingertips together, “the real fun can begin.”

“Are you a cartoon villain now?” he asked. “You probably don’t understand what that means, but you’re one step away from laughing maniacally as the world burns at your feet.”

“Why am I frozen?” Kirk asked. His words halted as he fought with his jaw to be able to speak. “Haven’t I been loyal to you, Froya?”

Froya’s attention snapped away from Devin. “I regret everything to do with you, Patron.”

“We had a good time, didn’t we?” Kirk managed to move his eyes until they focused on Devin. “Better than you had with him. That’s what you told me, at least.”

Devin snorted. “She was lying, you nitwit.”

“Or maybe you’re the one she was lying to, Devin. Your ego is much more sensitive than mine.” He shifted his gaze back to Froya. “I would have done anything for you.”

“Until now.” She stared at him coldly. “Now, instead of Sybille Esmond working for you, you work for her.”

“Actually, I work for this woman named Larkin Rainbow. She owns a crystal shop near the zoo.”

“Stop speaking.” Froya made a circle in the air with her index finger, and Kirk, formerly known as Bore, fell silent.

In that same moment, Devin bent a finger, then balled his hand into a fist. Mobile again, he dove in Froya’s direction, hitting her stomach with his shoulder and knocking her off her feet. They rolled onto the floor, his head thwacking against Kirk’s boot. Froya pushed him off her, using Kirk’s leg as a brace as she picked herself off the ground.

“I was hoping for some time on the floor with you. Just not like that.”

“It will never be like that with you again. You can’t even see how manipulative you are.” He circled around her. “Or maybe you can see it and you like that part of yourself.”

“It’s been an asset.”

“Deception as an asset.” He spit on the ground. “And you wonder why I don’t want to be with you.”

“I know why you don’t want to be with me, and it has nothing to do with my assets, which I’ve allowed you to thoroughly enjoy.
