Chapter Five

Sloan's head jerked up, eyes wide as he stared at me in shock.

Oh shit! He hadn't wanted to tell me.

I didn't know why the idea that he didn't want to tell me hit me so hard. I'd already kind of guessed that, hadn't I? But I guessed I had probably let a little bit of that nasty thing called hope sneak in too. Hope that he'd be as excited about finding his soulmate as I had been. Of course, I'd gotten a little better deal than him, so I could see how it wouldn't be such happy news to him.

"How?" he asked with a crease between his eyebrows. "Can you smell it?"

Swallowing my hurt as much as I could, I cleared my throat. "Let's just say I know far too much about what a pregnant bear's talents are from a blond bearer of TMI than I ever wanted or needed to know." I shrugged, faking a smile. "Obviously, when he said he could give the man head and not even have to touch his own dick, I paid attention."

Sloan levered himself further up onto his arms, looking down into my face, a slow smile spreading. "You're not freaking out."

Huffing out a laugh, I shook my head. "Nope."

Licking his lips, Sloan looked hopeful. "Does this mean you'd actually consider being my mate?"

Frowning at the perfect man with his nearly endless patience, his happy, easygoing personality, and the gorgeous light brown eyes, I shook my head in disbelief. "Why wouldn't I?"

Blinking at me like I was the one not making sense, he said, "You seemed so against anything about me in the beginning."

It was clear he believed that too. Which meant…"Fuck. I…fuck." Clenching my fists, I thought back to that first day and a few of the ones that followed, groaning when I couldn’t help but see why he would think I didn't want to be his mate, probably thinking that I was rejecting him. I'd hurt him because of my own fear of rejection, but what he'd had to feel in those moments was far worse than what I felt when Greg talked to me the way he did. I hated the guy. But being rejected again an again by your soulmate?

Grabbing the sides of his face, I looked into his amazing brown eyes, looking happy while my previous actions were killing me a little inside. "I'm so, so sorry. I didn't know. I knew I was attracted to you. Who wouldn't be? I just didn't believe that you could actually want me too. Not for more than just a one-off. I'm such an idiot."

Leaning forward, he kissed me, shaking his head when I tried to keep telling him how fucking stupid I was. He pulled back with a smile. "No. I should have just told you right away. I just feel like all the chosen around here cringe at the word mate. I thought you might too."
