Chapter Four

Losing Blood

Jason watched from the balcony as Mack’s mother approached the cellar door. She knelt, the many whites of her dress puffing up clouds of dust as she did. She stroked the new, brass chain looped through the handles of the door and sighed. Behind her, low clouds on the horizon glowed pink and orange with the falling rays of the sun.

“Will you confess today?” she asked the door.

Jason knew Mack would not respond. He was in mourning after all, just like his mother.

“Your silence doesn’t help. I won’t take the lock off your door unless you confess your sins to me. I know you can’t help being what you are. That man made you this way. But to murder your father… What did he ever do to deserve that? He saved you, didn’t he? From a life with that man…” She started to cry.

Jason descended the stairs as he did every night. He approached the weeping woman and bowed his head behind her. “Ma’am. Your son did nothing to your husband. Mack was with me that night. I have told you this many times but every day you put that chain across the door. And every night, I unlock it.”

“Well, you shouldn’t. If I could, I’d lock you up in here as well!” Evelyn spat in the dust. “My life was happy before you people came. Before you people ruined everything!” She pushed herself up and whirled to glare at Jason. “You think I don’t know what you and my son get up to at night? You think I’m a stupid woman, fit for nothing but to be a wife? Well, I’m not a wife anymore, thanks to you! And no matter what you say, I know he knows what happened to Allen.” She stalked past Jason and into the house. “And one day, he’s going to confess.” She slammed the door behind her.

Jason hesitated then approached the doors. He pulled a brass key from his pocket, tied with a white ribbon, and unlocked the chain. It rattled down the slope of the cellar doors and from within, Jason heard the comforting unlock of the latch. He pulled the doors open and Mack emerged, the same as he was the first night Jason saw him as a vampire, pale, almost glowing in the twilight. Mack continued to wear his wide-brimmed hat, his riding gear and boots. His face remained obscured, but Jason was happy to see what he could of the young man.

“I’m sorry,” Jason said.

“For what?”

“Your mother will not believe me about your father.”

Mack shrugged. “I’m not sure I believe us either.” He leaned forward. “We saw Zoran that night, but not since. It’s been almost two months now.”

“Zoran got what he wanted. He probably went back to Italy.”

“I hope so.”

Jason nodded. “Enough of this topic. Are you hungry?”

“Always.”

“Feel like a challenge?”

Mack grinned and shook his body. He started unbuttoning his shirt, pulling off his boots and trousers until he was standing naked before Jason. His skin was almost translucent, veins faint over his lean musculature.
