Nick—the man Connor had mentioned before—gave her one final smile before he left. When the door shut behind him, Dana turned back to Connor. He was lazing against the counter, and she recognised the seductive pull of his stance.

“I’m glad you’re home.”

She ignored the warmth in his voice and tried to focus on the groceries. “I didn’t run him off, did I?”

“Nah. We’d already worked everything out.”

“Long trip for such a quick meeting. Couldn’t you have called him?” She put away a few of the groceries.

“I could, but Nick was panicked that I was making the wrong decision.”

“Were you?”

“Not sure yet. I don’t think so.”

Curiosity had her. “What did he mean by you need to talk to me about something?”

“Later.”

His strong hands were on her hips. He pressed flush against her, burying his face against the crook of her neck.

“Sinclair—” she warned.

“Dana, let it be.”

His hands were questing northward, teasing along her ribs. Her resolve was weakening. “Connor, please—”

He pulled back, but the low growl he gave indicated his displeasure. He helped her prepare dinner, sat down with her, and ate in silence. The entire time, she felt the heat of his eyes sliding over her skin.

He at least waited for the dishes to be in the sink before he was up against her, pinning her in place against the counter.

“Connor!”

“Come on, Patterson,” he said, “I know you want me.”

She pushed him away, slipped to the side, discomfort growing. “What’s your news?”

“Really? You want to talk now?”

“Yes.”

“I don’t.”

“I noticed. What did you think we were going to do right now?”

“Fuck.”

Her body reacted instinctively to that word. It knew the promise laden in that slow cadence. But her mind was watching him closely. His movements were too fluid, his grace uncanny, and those eyes—the blue was watered down, leaving nothing but a silvery hue in its wake.

She backed slowly to the living room, Connor following calmly behind. Her unease spiked when she saw the beer bottle on the coffee table.

“Were you drinking?” she whispered.

His eyes flicked to the bottle, then back to her. “One beer,” he said dismissively. “Back to the question, Patterson.”

“The question?”

“Do you want to fuck me?”

“Tell me your news first,” she countered.

He shrugged. “I’m selling Infernus to Nick. Now, where?”

“Whoa—”

“Where do I get to have you?”

“Connor, I’m so not in the mood for sex right now.”

“Why not? Don’t you want me?”

The edge in his voice was new. It sent shivers down her spine.

“This is important,” she pleaded. “I want to know how you feel about this—”

“I don’t feel anything,” he spat. “I wouldn’t give a fuck if I did.”

His stance had shifted, become aggressive. She didn’t recognise him.

“I want you, Patterson. Don’t make me wait.”

“What’s wrong with you?” She couldn’t keep the whimper from her voice.

“Everything,” he shot back, closing the distance as he stalked toward her.

“Stop.”

“I always get what I want, Dana.”

“Connor, please. You’re scaring me.”

He paused. His spine straightened and his eyes darkened. Changed.

“Oh God,” he groaned. He clutched at his stomach. His fingers dug in so hard the knuckles went white.
