Chapter Thirteen

Breanne

“Matt?” Axel says, walking over to us as the meeting ends.

“Yeah?” Matt replies, trying and failing to conceal the anger in his voice. I can tell by the way his hand tightens around my waist that he's preparing for this conversation to go poorly.

“Your sister…” Axel begins, but Matt cuts him off.

“My sister can apologize herself.”

Axel lets out a long-suffering sigh.

“Unfortunately, I don’t think that’s going to happen anytime soon, but I do think you should talk to her. Hear her out.”

I feel Matt begin to vibrate with rage.

“Are you fucking serious, Axel?” he asks through clenched teeth.

Axel holds up his hands. “Listen, I know what she did was wrong. It came from a place of caring, but it was wrong. I would be just as furious as you, but she’s your sister.”

“Exactly! She’s my sister. She’s supposed to love and support me—not belittle my mate and disrespect my choices.” Matt’s volume rises, gaining attention from the others in the room. I place my hand on his back, hoping to calm him.

If I told him what his sister told me, he may cut her some slack. Another part of me worries if he’d leave me because of it. He may agree with her that I’m a monster and he’s better off without me.

Maybe he would be.

“I can see you’re still upset about it. Maybe another time,” Axel says, raising his hands and turning to walk away.

“Axel?” Matt waits until he’s a few steps away and calls out. “Unless Opal is ready to apologize to both me and Breanne, I don’t want to have anything to do with her.”

“Matt,” I whisper, looking up at him in shock.

It was never my intention to cause this rift between them. It’s not what I want, and the emotion in his voice tells me it’s not what he wants either.

“No, Bree. She doesn’t get a pass on this too,” he says, making me wonder what else she got a pass on. I leave it. For now…

“Understood,” Axel says, turning around again and walking out.

“Matt, she’s your sister,” I say seriously, turning him toward me.

“And if she cares for me like I do for her, she will apologize,” he states adamantly.

“I don’t want to come in between you and your family.”

“You’re not,” he says, placing a soft kiss on my lips. “She is.”

“Breanne?” I turn to find that Pearl has snuck up behind us. I release Matt and walk over to her. Instead of wrapping her in a hug as I would’ve once upon a time, I gently take both of her hands in mine.

“I’m so sorry—” I begin, but she cuts me off.

“You have nothing to be sorry for,” she says, squeezing my hands in return.

“Yes, I do,” I tell her, knowing full well that I have so much to apologize for.

The hunters had spent months trying to kidnap Pearl’s little sister, but they were met with resistance each time. They got tired of the struggle, so they sent me in after her.

When I got there, her sister wasn’t alone.
