Chapter 9

Embarrassment over her emotional outburst kept Evelyn far away from the old aviary the next day. She was busy as usual, so it wasn’t hard to avoid it. However, flashbacks kept hitting her: sobbing in Jax’s arms and begging him to stay with her until she slept; writhing like a woman unhinged with his tongue between her legs. A couple of times she cringed so hard, she had to apologise to bemused visitors who thought she was making faces at them.

She couldn’t cope with seeing Cleo either, so she hid in her car for lunch and pretended to be glued to her phone whenever any of the keepers walked past. When she finished, she headed over for afternoon checks on the little marmoset collection. The tiny, fuzzy primates were her favourite animals at Frinkley, and spending time with them was sure to cheer her up.

The route avoiding the eagle monsters took her past the main café building. Glancing through the window, Evelyn smiled to see every table full. The park really was thriving, although few visitors braved the picnic tables outside. Those who did were wrapped up in coats and hats, huddling together as they ate. Evelyn herself only had her Frinkley logo-stamped gilet atop her long-sleeved tee and trousers, but then she’d been doing manual labour all morning, keeping her nice and toasty.

The tangy aroma of burgers, chips and strong coffee hung in the air, and the hum of conversation and laughter came from the café. She let the familiar sounds wash over her as she strode past, until a set of voices stopped her in her tracks.

“No eagles at all, then?”

“I don’t think so…”

“Are you absolutely sure?”

“Not absolutely. I mean, I haven’t been here very long…”

Evelyn glanced over. Standing by one of the picnic tables, two men were looming over a young student keeper from the local college, one of several doing their work experience at Frinkley. The men were staring at the student intently as she twisted her fingers. Evelyn studied them as she approached. Both were tall and well-built, one with brown hair, the other blond. Neither looked like average zoo guests. The blond one wore a sharp grey suit, for goodness’ sake. The other’s ripped jeans, fitted tee and leather jacket looked designer quality.

“Need some help, Hannah?” Evelyn called.

All three turned, and Evelyn’s step faltered. The brown-haired man’s eyes were the most startling shade of hazel she’d ever seen, not dark amber like hers but more orangey-yellow, with flecks of green. He appraised her with a shocking amount of confidence, like a king surveying a servant.

Refusing to cower, she glanced at Hannah.

“Cleo’s asking for you,” she lied.

Something told her she needed to get the young girl away from these men. Hannah clearly felt the same, if the way she nodded and skittered off was anything to go by.

Drawing herself up to her not very considerable height, Evelyn gave the men her most professional smile. “I’m a senior keeper here. May I help you?”

“Possibly.” The blond’s smile didn’t reach his bright blue eyes.
