Bartholomew

Rage.

There isn’t a better word I can find to describe the sensation within me.

Oh, yes you can.

Misery.

But there’s no place in my world for self-pity right now. Not ever. There are more important things to worry about than green-eyed temptresses and so-called love enchantments.

What bullshit is that, anyhow?

I’m sitting at my desk, the warm oak a familiar companion for when I’m lost in thought like this. I’ve spent countless hours facing decisions for my people while sitting here.

This has to be the hardest.

Sunlight streams through the windows of my study, casting golden rays across the thick gray carpets and dancing on the bookshelves lining one wall. The light should be comforting, but it only serves as a cruel reminder that I am a creature of darkness, grappling with an insidious curse that’s turning my people into bloodthirsty killers.

I clench my fists, my nails digging into my palms. How did this happen? When will it end?

As if summoned by my dark thoughts, Aurora’s ethereal face floats before my eyes. Her fiery red hair, those bewitching green eyes – they haunt me, taunt me, even now.

I grit my teeth and shake my head, trying to banish her from my mind. But the memory lingers, along with the knowledge that I am under her spell – a love spell, of all things. It feels like a betrayal, a violation of my deepest self, yet…part of me craves her touch, her presence.

You have to get over this, Bartholomew!

Guilt and desire war within me. I must find a way to break this enchantment, to free myself from her clutches. But how can I fight an enemy I can’t see, a force that’s woven itself into the very fabric of my being?

“My Lord,” Faine says, entering the room. “Your advisors are waiting.”

“Tell them I’ll be there shortly,” I reply, taking a deep breath. This is no time for personal distractions. My people need me now more than ever.

“Damn you, Aurora,” I whisper under my breath, cursing the woman who’s managed to bewitch my heart amidst an unraveling world.

As I rise from my desk and stride toward the door, I make a silent vow to myself: I will find a way to save my people and protect my kingdom – and then I will unweave the tangled web Aurora has spun around my heart. But right now, I must focus on the first point; my advisors are waiting, and they’re going to want answers.

The grand council chamber is filled with an air of tension as I enter. Luther, Radella, Salem, and Mortas are seated around the large table, their expressions a mixture of concern and determination. They know why I’ve called them together – the recent upheaval in the vampire world, the Curse that’s turning my people into bloodthirsty killers.

“Thank you for coming,” I say, taking my seat at the head of the table. “We have much to discuss.”

“Indeed, Grand Master,” Luther replies, his steel-haired head nodding gravely. “This Curse is spreading rapidly. There was yet another incident this very week.
