ADRIEN STOOD at the edge of the clearing. Nicolas and Blaise waited behind him, their weapons trained on the trees, ready to strike. The sky had grown lighter, but thick clouds blocked the sun. The lost waited, their pale skin visible through the trees, the rotting stench of them making Adrien’s stomach roil.

They’d agreed that Adrien would face the lost in the morning, when they were weakest. Still, Adrien sensed the fear in Nico’s heart as he stepped front and center, hands by his sides. Unarmed.

“I’m waiting.” Adrien stood before them.

After a while, several of the larger creatures approached, flanked by several dozen lost. Their raspy breathing echoed in the silence as they drew nearer. Soon others joined the first. Without understanding how, Adrien sensed that each was hungry for his blood, driven by the scent of him, wanting to devour him.

They stopped abruptly a few feet away.

“You do not fear us?” asked a voice in Adrien’s mind.

Adrien stood his ground. “I have nothing to fear from you.”

“You smell like him,” they said.

“Him?”

“The master.”

Adrien bit the skin at his wrist and held it out. Droplets of blood fell onto the grass, and some of the lost moved closer still.

The creature closest to Adrien raised its hands and two ropes of gold light flew toward Adrien, winding around his body. Adrien felt stabbing pain in his chest but did not flinch or fall. Something grabbed his wrist. Pain lanced through his arm, and the world around him melted away.
