Chapter 6

The next morning I woke up to find Jax dressed and sitting at the table across the room scrolling through his phone with what looked like breakfast from some fast food place sitting in front of him.

I sat up, blinking, waiting for the haze to clear.

“Morning,” he said without looking up.

“Hey,” I said. “Is that breakfast?” I grabbed the sheet and pulled it up to cover my boobs. Not that I’d ever cared to cover myself in this kind of situation before. What was wrong with me?

He nodded. “Hungry?” I didn’t miss the curious look he gave me. He didn’t expect the modesty either.

I looked around for that robe from last night. Jax got up and pulled one off a hanger on a rack by the door and brought it to me. He held it out and let me thread my arms in, closing it in front and tying it up before I could get to it myself. “Thanks,” I muttered.

“Sure,” he said, sitting back in his seat. I sat across from him.

He’d bought every breakfast sandwich the place offered, plus pancakes, sausages and a blueberry muffin. I looked at him. “You took my car?”

“Pssshhh, now you know how I make the ladies purr, Crim. You know she’s better than fine.”

I snapped my eyes up to his, in shock he’d be so direct about it. Not that it wasn’t exactly like him to be forthright and unambiguous, but I was still reeling over what had happened between us. I needed to have him again, but I couldn’t. Who even was I now?

“Don’t take my car without asking again, but thanks for breakfast,” I said, unwrapping a bacon and egg sandwich.

“Crim,” he said. I looked up at him, his gaze soft and warm. “You okay?”

I nodded. “I’m fine. I should have recharged some stuff in the moonlight last night. I’m going to have to do a blood ritual you might not like.”

“A blood ritual?”

I nodded. “I need as much magic as I can gather before we get to the cabin today.”

He sighed. “Just tell me what you need.”

“Nothing. Just stay out of my way.”

“I’ll try, Princess.” He winked at me.

I took a bite of my sandwich. “So, how’s Maya?”

His eyes widened for a moment before he caught himself. “What are you doing?”

“Just making conversation.”

“No you’re not. We’re the same. I see you.”

I gave him a sad smile. “I know.”

“Oh, don’t start,” he said. “Just chill.”

I shrugged. “I’m chill.”

“No you’re not, you’re freaking out.”

I shook my head. “I’m fine.”

He licked his lips and got up, crossing to me in one step, then reached down to pick me up by the waist. I grabbed onto his shoulders when my feet left the floor and yelled at him to put me down. He did, right onto the bed. Then he crawled over the top of me.

“Jax, we have shit to do.”

He nodded. “I know. I won’t keep you. But first things first.” He pried my knees apart with his and climbed in between them without ever moving his face from mine.
