Chapter 16

A New Home

“Aren’t you going to bring in your empty frame?” I ask. I’m holding a box of his clothing, ready to bring it to our new room. I need to stop by my own place later to bring over some essentials I didn’t yesterday. I don’t know how long this charade with his family is going to go, but I have to plan for at least a few more weeks. After that, I don’t know. I’m trying not to think about it.

“No, it should stay in here,” he says. I watch Asher from the side of my eye, but don’t reply. He looks at the empty frame silently until the sound of boots echo in the hall outside the room.

Evan knocks and leads us to our new space to share together, in the same hall as the crystal. I feel a powerful hum in my body as we enter the hall. Being so close to this substantial power source will take some time to get used to.

I watch Evan walk away after dropping a few boxes in our new room, leaving us to unpack without ceremony. I can’t get a read on him. He seems so far removed from his brothers; part of a system but on the edge in a way that Asher isn’t. Evan is playing the game—he registers the third most chaos energy of the five—but he doesn’t have the angry attitude and aggression to match them. Why didn’t Evan take his younger brother under his wing? They could have teamed up. I shake my head, pulling my thoughts from Evan. He isn’t the brother I am here to pay attention to.

In the center of our new room stands a four-poster bed with black gauzy curtains. It’s a king bed, bigger than my apartment bed and the one Asher slept on put together. There’s a desk, dresser, walk-in closet, and a large bathroom with a shower that has multiple heads I’m dying to try out.

I finish my perusal and drop Asher’s clothing box by the closet.

“What do you think?” I ask him, walking back to the center of the bedroom.

“It’s big,” he says hesitantly.

“Most bathrooms are bigger than the room they gave you,” I joke, tucking back a strand of my hair.

“True, but it was home. This is new.” He sounds defeated, low energy, and I don’t like it.

I stride toward where he stands, tapping my finger on his chest and pushing so he steps back. I poke him again and the back of his feet hit one of the corners of the bed.

“Snap out of it,” I tell him.

“Out of what?” Asher asks, bracing himself against the bed frame so he doesn’t fall back.

“You want to win, right?” I prod, the finger tapping his chest slowly trailing down.

“No,” he breathes out, eyes searching mine.

“Fine,” I ground out. We don’t need to win. While I’d like to just spit in their faces, it truly isn’t the main thought. I clarify, “You want to live, right?”

“Yes.” He nods.
