SATURDAY MORNING, Tonya woke up still thinking about the night before. It was more than a little confusing, but first things first. Tonya had to get up and deal with the dirty laundry. Without getting caught, she had to somehow put the bloomers back. Aunt Helene would be moving back into her shop on Monday, which gave Tonya enough time to wash the bloomers out by hand and smuggle them back onto the clothes line.

She was headed out, damp underthings in hand, when her mother intercepted her in the hall. “Where are you going with those?”

“Uh, the wash line?”

Aunt Helene came out of the bathroom brushing her hair. “That’s where they were!” She quirked her head at Tonya. “Why do you have my underpants?”

“Uh.” Tonya didn’t know what to say.

Helene took the bloomers and ran one hand over them, brows knit in concentration. They tuned a shade lighter, instantly dry.

“Don’t waste magic on them.” Tonya’s Mom sighed at Aunt Helene. “Why do you even keep those ratty old things?”

“You know why.” Aunt Helene laughed. “I told you the other night.”

“I thought it was just the whiskey talking,” said Mom.

“No, ma’am. Sometimes when I’m headed out on a date with a guy who is, you know, too hot to handle, I wear those ugly babies to slow things down. Know what I mean?” Helene shot Tonya a conspiratorial wink.

What was she talking about? The bloomers attract guys. They worked on Vince.

“Too much information,” said Mom.

“What?” Tonya couldn’t believe her ears.

“Think I’d let anybody to see me in granny panties?” asked Helene. “Sometimes on a really hot date, wearing Godzilla gotchies is the best way to make sure everybody keeps their clothes on.”

Mom and her sister giggled, and this time Tonya was smiling, too. Her aunt’s nasty old drawers were passion killers, not hot pants.

She could hardly wait to see Vince again on Monday!
