Sebastian

I pulled up my Christmas playlist on Spotify and turned it up while Brynlee and I worked on finishing decorating the cabin. The mood had shifted from the depressing conversation we had after the movie, and the smile on her face as she hung an ornament on the tree was priceless.

We had gone through the bags of stuff we’d purchased in town and decided to make the tree our own instead of using any of the decorations Bert had. I loved seeing how her eyes lit up every time we added another ornament, pure excitement and joy shining in them.

“Now, while we might remain undecided on what the best Christmas movie is, I think we can both agree that decorating is better than anything else we could have done tonight,” I said, reaching above her head to hang an ornament.

Her cheeks flushed a cute shade of light pink as she ducked away from me and moved around to the back of the tree. I didn’t want to embarrass her, so I let it go. But deep down, I was curious about what she had been thinking to get that kind of reaction.

“It is pretty fun,” she agreed, barely peeking her head around the bushy tree to smile at me. “I’m glad we picked our own decorations. I like that better than using ones someone else picked.”

“I agree.”

We kept hanging the glass ball ornaments, moving around each other in the tiny space as music floated around us.

“How’s it going with your manuscript?” I asked, knowing that she was getting down to the wire with Christmas Eve being only four days away.

“It’s getting there.” She sighed heavily and came around to the front of the tree, smiling as she stared at it. “I have twenty thousand words left, more or less. I thought I was close to being done, but then a plot twist happened. Now I have to work that in, which threw my schedule off.”

“Do you ever think about writing other genres?” I busied myself with putting more hooks through the last few ornaments, hoping she didn’t read through the real reason I was asking.

“Not really. I occasionally read romance, but I don’t entertain the thought of writing it.”

“Why not? Romantic suspense would be a great transition for you since you’ve already nailed the suspense side with your thrillers.”

“I don’t think I would be very good at it.” She made a face that pulled a chuckle from deep in my chest.

“Writing romance isn’t that hard,” I said, handing her an ornament to hang.

“It is if you don’t know anything about it.” She laughed, but I felt something tug at my heart, wondering if she had ever been in love.

“I make up more than half of what I write,” I admitted. “Trust me, it’s easy enough. Just like you do a great job of writing thrillers, but I’m sure you don’t pull from personal experience of stalking and murdering people.”

She arched an eyebrow and gave me a sly smile.

“And all this
