The only means controlling this fire is by the amount of air, and the volume of fuel. If you desire a higher heat temperature, you could increase the heat by adding fuel and allowing more air flow. Although this forge has lasted thousands of years, it still has the following features:

Tuyere: A channel, usually a pipe, through which air is forced into the forge.

Hearth: This is above the tuyere opening and is where the fire is made, where the burning fire is.

Bellows or blower: The entry of the tuyere, a means of forcing air into the air channel.

The smith controls the heat temperature to the kind of work he is doing by adjusting the fuel and the airflow. He could also adjust the length and width of the fire of such a forge to accommodate different shapes of work. If the smith is using coal and coke in one fire, the coke should be placed in the middle as it easily and quickly catches temperature and is much easy to set on fire. The coal should be placed just round about it.

There are a variety of this one kind of forge, with different designs, shapes and color. However, all we have listed above remains the basic way that a coal or coke forge can be used, irrespective of the shape or color.
