Chapter 8

The kids slowly opened their eyes. Bright sunlight streamed through the windows making them squint. Emma and Brody sat up and stretched. Max and Rose lay motionless. Aspen bounded from her comfortable corner and bumped Max on the forehead with a wet nose. Max groaned and rolled over.

Aspen moved to Rose and repeated her wet nose bump on the sleeping girl’s cheek. “Ah, gross,” Rose whined as she sat up and looked around the room.

Emma giggled. “Brody, I’m not sure how you can have short, spike hair and have it be so messed up in the morning, but you really need to see it.”

“Thanks, Emma. You’re so funny. You should take a look at your own hair.” Brody stood then tussled Emma’s brown locks. “It’s kind of a mess too.”

“Hey, that wasn’t nice.” Emma stuck her tongue out at Brody who laughed and went into the bathroom to wash his face.

“You really should braid your hair like I do at night, Emma. That way it isn’t tangled or messy when you wake up. See.” Max removed an elastic from the end of her hair and ran her fingers through her braid letting her blonde hair fall around her face.

“That’s a pretty good trick,” Rose said. “My hair is long but since it has curl it’s hard to tell when it’s messy or when I just fixed it.” Max and Emma giggled as Rose shook her head, releasing the curls from their nighttime rest.

“You look like Little Orphan Annie,” Emma teased.

“Who?” Rose asked.

“Nevermind.”

“Breakfast is almost ready,” Black called from the kitchen.

Emma realized that she could smell bacon cooking. Yum, she thought. So far, the food in Australia had been really good and similar to what she ate at home. She sighed. Home. She missed her mom and dad. It was weird for her to think that she could be in Australia for several days and when she went back home, the cave would take her back to the same day she left, so her parents would never figure out that she was gone. They just thought that she was working in Mr. M’s project room, helping to get the rock and mineral display back in shape for the exhibition.

Emma pushed the thoughts of home out of her mind and took her turn in the bathroom to wash her face and hands and swish clean water over her teeth. She wished she had more disposable toothbrushes. Emma felt better and went to the kitchen to help Black while Rose and Max straightened the couches, folded the blankets and then cleaned themselves up for breakfast.

Black and Emma fixed a plate of bacon and eggs for each of them and they all sat on the porch to eat and watch the sunrise over the grassy fields surrounding the house where just yesterday a mob of kangaroo almost trampled them.

Aspen finished her meal first and sat watching the others. When a small piece of food fell from a plate to the porch, Aspen was quick to snatch the morsel for her dessert.
