CHAPTER TEN

Don’t talk to her about the incident.”

Before leaving the clinic, Gonzalo warned the doctor and nurse against contaminating Luisa.

“Keep her away from other patients and staff. Don’t even let her listen to the radio. I don’t want her to start filling in gaps in her memory from the information you can give her, you understand me?”

“Don’t worry, Gonzalo. After the way you left her, she’s not going to talk to anyone else,” the doctor warned.

He, too, was upset over the attack, and he was sure that Gonzalo wasn’t going to catch any culprits by disturbing the patient under his care.

Gonzalo’s next step was to check up on Collazo and interrogate the two men he had in custody. He was certain that one of them had committed the crime. This relieved some of the pressure on him. Though he would never have admitted it openly, at the moment that he left the clinic, his biggest worry was whether he would be able to wrap up the loose ends and charge the right suspect before the sheriff of Comerio went in to work at nine. Nine o’clock was also the time when he expected Yolanda Ferré to try to bail out her husband. He hoped to have clear and certain evidence long before Yolanda came to him.

“¿Qué dices?” he asked when he saw Collazo searching through the overgrowth on the Ferré property.

“Have you found anything?”

“No.”

“No sign of struggle?”

“No.”

“None of her clothing?”

“No,” Collazo answered, looking up in annoyance.

“Did you check on the other side of the house?”

“Uh-huh.”

“How about across the street?”

“It’s all clear there.”

“You checked the whole block?”

“Can’t you see? It’s all clear. The grass has been cut recently. You can’t hide anything there.”

Gonzalo paused a moment. He realized that this type of investigation was a strain on his deputy. Normally, Collazo would have awakened from a nap at about five. Instead he had been running around town since he came on duty six-and-a-half hours earlier. Still, he would have liked a civil tone from his deputy. He decided to avoid confrontation and change the subject.

“Have you seen Ramirez?”

“No. Probably went home.”

“I’m going to take a look at Mendoza’s field and the side of the road between here and there. Then I’m going to the station to start questioning them. I want you to come after me and search all that area more closely. The stuff has to be somewhere.”

“Right. Anyway, I’m done with his property. Unless he dragged her a few hundred yards in without making a sound, nothing happened here.”

“Take a closer look, Collazo; she might have walked with him for a while before he grabbed her.”

Collazo gave a skeptical look.

“You never know.”

Gonzalo made a brief search of the roadside between the Ferré home and Mendoza’s fields. He found nothing but the usual litter. What he wanted was torn clothing or a matted area, signs of struggle or spots of blood. He found none of these. He found no signs that anything had happened at all.

It was nearing seven in the morning.
