CHAPTER 31

MY EYES STUNG with tears as I stumbled back to the training center. All I wanted to do was go back to my room and curl up on the bed and never come out so I could work through the questions that were racing through my head.

How could she know about our mothers being sisters? Was it a lie? Was she trying to get me to stop seeing Gabe? But why?

And why were my parents involved with an organization that trained kids how to fight for war? How did they get involved in the first place? How could I go on knowing they were part of something so awful? And why had they never told me about it? Why was it such a big secret that they had to keep this important detail from their own daughter? And what did Jill mean by not waiting until it was too late?

I heard running footsteps behind me but I kept moving forward and stared straight ahead, feeling numb and worn out. I paused outside the door of the training room, my hand resting on the door handle. In my periphery, I spotted Victor and Nina passing me in the hallway. Nina looked back, stopped, and then walked back toward me.

“Are you okay?” she asked. “It looks like you’ve seen a ghost.”

“Yeah,” I replied weakly. “It’s nothing. I can’t really talk about it.”

She watched me for another few seconds. “Okay,” she said hesitantly, like she wasn’t sure if she should give in or continue to press me for more information. “I hope it’s nothing major.”

I gave her a weak smile, then I pushed through the door of the training room. My stomach twisted at the smell of sweat in the air, and I quickened my pace as I covered my mouth and headed straight for the locker room, only looking up to meet Gabe’s gaze for a brief moment on my way across the room.

Once inside, I leaned over the counter and stared down at the sink basin as the tears made their escape, spattering on the stainless steel. I squeezed my eyes shut and took a deep breath. What else would I learn about my parents? How could they be involved in an organization that trained kids how to fight? Was Jill telling me the truth or was this all a lie? Was it supposed to get a rise out of me?

If that were the case, she had succeeded. Mission accomplished. How can we get another rise out of Emerson?

I shook my head and sighed. What was the point of getting upset now? I was stuck. Stuck in an underground facility with no known way out. And even if we did find a way out, our trackers would give us away.

It was useless.

This was our fate and we had to deal with it and make the best of it. It was either that or find ourselves removed from the program and who knew what that meant. I had a pretty good idea.
