“I can’t believe you’re already back at work,” Hogan grumbled.

He was pretty sure Morven rolled his eyes, but Morven was leaning toward a screen, watching it instead of Hogan, so it could have been something else. “I already told you I don’t need time off, not right now. I’d rather have it once the egg hatches.”

“You’re the boss. You could take time off both now and then.”

Morven straightened and turned to Hogan. “I’m not sure if you love me that much or if you have your eyes on my job and want me out of the way.”

Hogan shuddered in horror. “I don’t want your job. I didn’t even want this job, but I can’t give it up.”

Morven’s gaze was knowing. “Because of Cain and the baby.”

Hogan nodded curtly. He didn’t want to say it out loud, and besides, Morven already knew all about this. “You can keep your job, and I’ll keep mine. I’m just worried about you. I remember all too well when Cain laid his egg, and it’s too soon for you to be back at work.”

“But Cain laid his egg alone in the forest.”

“What am I, chopped liver?”

Morven chuckled. “No, but you’re not a healer. You did everything you could, and thankfully, both the egg and Cain are okay. It makes sense that he was more tired, though, especially when you consider everything else. He’d been running for part of the night, and he was nervous and anxious. He had to recuperate from that as much as he did from the laying. I didn’t have any of those problems. I laid the egg in my nest, with a healer there. I’m perfectly fine, so you can stop worrying.”

Hogan doubted he ever would. He cared about his friends, and he didn’t think that was a problem.

“We have a message coming in,” someone in the room said.

Hogan looked around the security room. He wasn’t crazy about this place, even though he realized it was a necessary evil. It was too small, too crowded with computers and dragons. Even though some of them were in their human form, it still felt like it was closing around Hogan, which made him want to run away screaming.

Or maybe he wanted to run to Cain.

“What kind of message?” Morven asked as he moved toward the dragon who’d spoken.

“It comes from outside. It’s not one of ours, so probably from another clan.” She narrowed her eyes and stared at the screen.

Hogan had no idea how computers worked, but he didn’t need to. Thankfully, other people could do that for him.

“It’s from the Eiloren clan,” the dragon said.

Hogan’s back went ramrod straight. He and Morven looked at each other. They both knew what it meant. The Eiloren clan had found out that Cain was with the Ogorth clan, and they weren’t happy.

This was Hogan’s worst nightmare, but he tried to calm himself by thinking about the fact that no matter what happened, he would protect Cain. He was ready to do anything to help him and keep him here, but if he couldn’t, he was also ready to leave with him.
