Chapter Twelve

A FEW DAYS LATER, Letitia wondered if she’d finally driven Jude away. He hadn’t shown up since that night on the beach. The poor guy was obviously mortified at his uncontrolled shifting. She grinned. As frustrating as it was, it was also rather endearing. So he wasn’t perfect. Who was?

Still, there was always the chance he was around. She looked out the newly assigned barracks window and scoured the trees and the grounds. She didn’t like bunking in the back room of the mess hall, but it was the only available space for a female Tracker. Wolves didn’t do coed when it came to Trackers. She looked outside again and sighed. Truth be told, she hoped Jude was still around, because no matter who and what he was, she felt safer with him in the vicinity.

She turned back to the room, yanked open her dresser drawer and pulled out her combat gear for the day. She took off her pajamas, and pulled on her T-shirt and combat pants. She sighed and worked at her lip with her teeth. She’d continually made calls to try and track down Vanessa, but she was nowhere to be found. She’d rather be trying to find her friend right now, but she had to return for weekend training, especially with the charges pending against her. If she didn’t show up, they’d probably arrest her on the spot for being AWOL.

It seemed like everything she did these days compounded the trouble she was already in. She sighed again and headed for duty. Hard to say what kind of trouble she’d manage to get herself into today, still it didn’t detract from her original goal. Becoming the first female Tracker.

Normally she loved training and actually enjoyed being on the parade square on Saturday morning. This morning, though, she had a different agenda.

Standing at attention with two lines of soldiers facing each other, some of whom she went to school with, she could see each cadet. Every single one of them resented her being here and they treated her accordingly. Like that’d scare her off.

She scanned the faces in front of her. Who hated her enough to blow her up? Were any of these men involved in trying to get rid of her? Did any of them look guilty, or more interested in her than they should be?

Then she saw the last face in the line and nearly forgot the order to stand at attention.

Jude Black stood in the line in a militia outfit, as if he were a wolf in training. She swallowed hard. So much for thinking he wasn’t around anymore. Was he stark raving bonkers?

“Troops, we have a new recruit,” Commander Jones shouted. “Transferred in from one of our training facilities in Europe. Cadet Black, step forward.”

“Sir! Yes, sir!” Jude stamped his feet and stepped forward, came smartly to attention and saluted.

“Everyone. I want you to make Cadet Black welcome. He’s going to be here with us for a short time as part of an exchange program the Trackers in Europe are initiating.
