Chapter 10

“Alright, hit me with your best shot,” I said, semi-confidently as I braced myself against … desire? What would being enthralled be like? I shook it off so quickly before that I hadn’t had the full experience, I had only known that I was being affected in some way.

The twins shared a look, before Mason stepped forward slowly. The more serious twin closed his eyes briefly, before opening them, the blue-green orbs darkening a little while his pupils became a slit. I gave a gasp as I felt his magic wash over me, and started jumping. I blinked in surprise. I hadn’t known thrall could be used like this.

I physically shook my head, willing the magic off of my form like shaking off water. I stopped jumping abruptly, looking at Mason contemplatively.

“That is a dangerous piece of magic,” I mused, earning a nod from the twins.

“It’s very useful—we could make someone do anything we want, so long as they either don’t notice we’ve used it on them, or can’t break free of it. Unfortunately, it can be … inconvenient at odd times,” James admitted quietly. I nodded slowly, pursing my lips thoughtfully.

“And … it works similar to illusion magic?” I asked, suddenly doubtful they’d be able to help with my training.

“Oh, yeah! They both work on will more than control, though you do need a tiny bit of finesse if you don’t want someone who’s sensitive to magic to notice that it’s happening,” James explained. Mason moved to stand further away from us, turning to face me. He motioned for me to come at him, and I sighed, musing on what I should do. I settled on casting my magic at the ground around him, willing the scene in my mind into being.

The sound of the ocean crashed around us, turbulent waves rising around our knees in great, cold gusts of movement. Seabirds called from above us, barely heard over the sound of water. James and Mason both started shivering, before they both called out for me to end it. I cut off the flow of magic abruptly, and the water faded away into misty energy, dissipating within seconds. I panted lightly, joy surging through me. I did it!

“Holy crap. I’m actually shivering!” James said quietly, stepping closer to me to wrap his arms around me, his body trembling around mine. Mason stepped forward as well, sandwiching me from the other side, also shivering from the brief cold.

“W-well, apart from the obviousness of the ocean not being where you’d expect it, your magic was pretty overpowering—I couldn’t have broken that illusion if I wanted to, even though I knew it was magic. I think we should work on our thrall control, might help us warm up a little,” Mason grinned down at me, wiggling his eyebrows. I blushed slightly, nodding.

“I’ll just hang out by your back and spot you guys. I’m still trying to recover from that cold,” James muttered from where his nose was buried in my neck. Mason snorted in response, before grinning down at me.
