Oysters are an aphrodisiac

This belief has been common since ancient times, when oysters formed a key part of the notorious orgies or bacchanalian feasts of the Romans. There is no scientific evidence for this claim—it is probably linked to the vague similarity between oysters and female genitals. It is considered unlucky to eat oysters except when there is an “r” in the month, a superstition which made sense before the days of imported food, since it corresponded to the oyster season in Britain. More mysterious is the old wives’ tale that a drop of saliva in an oyster shell may cure deafness if it is then buried in animal manure.
