Chapter 2

Every day, Michael followed nearly the same routine.

He woke before dawn. His penthouse was at the top of the corporate offices for Dreas Pharmaceuticals. He literally lived and worked in the same place. Though he had other homes elsewhere, he was most comfortable there, within the epicenter of the action. It may have seemed an odd thing to others, but it was the choice that he preferred. Only Sharla and a few other members of his select inner circle knew this. He laughed sometimes when he overheard employees say about him that it “seemed like he was always at work.”

His morning started with an injection. His medication was one only synthesized by his company. The fact that he now had a handful of others who knew about it, and would pay ungodly fees for even the smallest amount of the compound, was a little known fact. For years, he had carefully doled out just who would be able to receive his product. He didn’t trust just anybody with it. There was always the possibility that someone could tell. There were a few that had tried, but their life expectancies had been cut short.

He sat on the edge of the bed for a few minutes after administering the dosage. There was always a feeling that followed it: a rush, dizziness, and a sort of pain beneath his skin, like the tips of needles being pulled against exposed flesh. When he first began to take it, the pain had been almost unbearable, like having his entire body scraped with millions of pinpricks. It had been years now, and the pain was there but easily manageable now. The doctor who created the compound for him said that his body was slowly adjusting over time. Dr. Emerson said that over time he should need less of the serum, as he developed a state where his blood would retain some amount of the compound permanently.

Or so he said. It was all theory at this point. Michael was indeed his guinea pig for this experiment. Or patient zero. Michael wasn’t sure which the most apt description was.

He and Emerson weren’t exactly friends. They had a relationship that was mutually beneficial. Michael depended on the doctor’s abilities, which allowed him a quality of life he would not have been able to attain otherwise. The doctor, whom he’d had me some years back, willingly provided his services. He was paid very well for his work and his silence.

Michael had thrown in the benefit of offering Emerson immortal life as part of the deal.

After the sizzling in his veins stopped, Michael was able to get up and have breakfast. That was perhaps his favorite part of the day: bacon, eggs, sausage, and grits, toast on the side. He was an Italian, but he preferred grits to polenta.

He’d only been able to indulge in this simple joy for the last twelve years, since he first started on the serum. He’d cried the first time that he was able to eat again, because it had been several hundred years since he’d had food before that.
