Chapter 4

Dawn and Joan were at Dave’s door for a few minutes before he let them in. When he finally opened the door, Dawn saw that he was a handsome young man with long brunette hair and blue eyes. He was dressed in Earth colors and reminded Dawn of a hippie.

“Are you Ok?” he immediately asked Joan, too concerned about her to pay Dawn much attention.

“Somewhat,” Joan replied. “I need to get cleaned up.”

“She was very brave today,” Dawn explained. “She saved my life!”

“I’m proud! Of you!” Dave exclaimed. He hugged Joan, ignoring her rancid smell. “I actually have a better suit for you to change into after you take a shower.”

“Really?”

“Yeah, it’s actually supposed to be bite-proof. I bought it off of my friend who believes in the Zombie apocalypse long before I knew people were actually going to start running around biting each other!”

“I bet those are selling really well now.”

“Yeah, they’re selling for a lot more now that people actually need ‘em. Good thing I got a couple before all of this.”

“So you have two?” Dawn asked.

“Two and only two.”

“How do we decide who gets...?”

Joan looked at Dawn and Dave. She wanted both of them to be safe, but she didn’t want to give up her suit. Either Dawn or Dave would have to go without.

“Sorry,” said Joan. “One of you is going to have to go without. I guess we flip a coin. Dawn, you’re heads, Dave, you’re tails.”

Dave pulled a coin out of his pocket and flipped it. He got tails. “Woo hoo!” he exclaimed. “But actually, if you really want to wear it...”

Dawn declined. “It’s OK,” she told the young man. “You and Joan are young and have a life ahead of you. You two should both survive for each other. Besides, I can wear Joan’s hazmat suit when she gets all of the vomit out of it.”

Once everyone was cleaned up, each wearing protective gear, they piled up in Joan’s truck. Conversation came easily.

“So,” Dawn asked Dave, “how are your classes? Joan said you like philosophy. Philosophy was always a little abstract for me, but it’s definitely interesting...”

“Definitely,” said Dave. “I love it. But I don’t really know which philosophy I follow exactly. Right now we’re studying utilitarianism. Utilitarianism is basically about the well-being of the majority at the expense of the few. Our professor asked us if we would shoot 8 innocents if it meant saving 100 more innocents...”

“I remember being asked something similar in school,” said Dawn. “What was your answer?”

“I didn’t answer,” said Dave. “It was a tough question.”

Dawn couldn’t remember what her answer was either. She decided not to think about it. She thought the whole question might distract her from the problems at hand.
