Sebastian

What a surprise. I’d been hurt about how Gianna had treated me before I’d left, but she came all this way to see me? I guess I had nothing to worry about.

I’d just checked up with Jackson to make sure he was doing okay. He appeared to be in better spirits and not so down as he had on the way up. Dreading something could be worse than the experience itself. I’d been discovering that myself after avoiding returning here to the mountains after many years.

Once Gianna told me her location, I jogged down the slope, slipping on some wet leaves, yet my wolf urged me to hurry. The sun dipped low, barely visible now, casting stark shadows cutting across the forests. The trees loomed in my path like silent sentries. She wasn’t far from me, just over near one of the restaurants I’d walked by earlier.

As I approached, I ramped up my speed, anticipation soaring in my veins. But then I then tripped over a bump in the brick pavement and stumbled forward, barely regaining my balance before bumbling my arrival.

My wolf stood alert, taking notice. I sensed Gianna and straightened, attempted to smooth my awkward arrival.

“Sebastian.”

I turned to her voice, my favorite song. My heart jolted with elation. “You came.”

“I’m sorry I didn’t come sooner.” She stepped out of the shadows from behind a brick building. Her face was covered in a scarf and her eyes by dark sunglasses. “And I’m sorry I avoided you before you left.”

I exhaled, releasing the tension out of my neck and shoulders. She hadn’t been pushing me away after all.

“Why are you all covered up? The sun has set.” I motioned to the twilight sky. Sure, maybe there was a cool bite in the mountain air at night that she wasn’t used to, but the glasses weren’t needed at this hour. I approached to embrace her. Her scent enveloped me, and I inhaled more deeply. Home. My wolf relaxed with content.

She put her hand up, stopping me. “Sebastian, there’s something I need to tell you.”

The grave tone of her voice left me on edge. “What’s wrong?

“Something terrible has happened.” Her voice was shaky.

My protective instincts roared to life. “What is it?”

She sighed. “I’ve been affected by magic.” She pursed her lips. “More like a curse.”

“What? A curse?” Questions swirled around my brain. I stepped closer and scanned her covered up frame. “Are you hurt?”

“Sebastian, please.” She raised her hand as if to stop me. “I’m okay but let me get this out.” She took a deep breath and released a shaky exhale. “I’ve aged.” She sniffled. “A lot.”

What was she talking about? “I don’t follow.”

“I’m going to show you. Please don’t freak out. I’m already so self-conscious as it is.”

“Okay,” I promised.

“It’s bad,” she warned. “But remember, it’s still me.”

She slowly unwrapped the animal-print scarf from around her head. Her dark hair was now pure white. I blinked. What the furry blazes was going on? Did she dye it that color? No, she said she aged.
