Chapter 7

Chloe stared at the rose. The petals had blown off and a blackened stem lay in front of her. Damn it!

She could blow a vampire away by just raising a hand, but she couldn’t work the simplest of spells. Months gone. It’s been months. I should have this by now. They’d held a funeral for Matt that first weekend. It was a small affair with only their closest family members attending. Of course with the Wills family that meant cousins, aunts, and uncles -- really any living relative. They were hunters, and they bound together for support when one of their own died.

Chloe felt removed from the whole thing. Sort of like the dreams she kept having-- that is until he arrived. Alexander. They talked for what seemed like hours. Her angel. She’d decided he could be nothing else as his desire for her shone in his eyes, but he never acted on it. Not once. Of course, it was all her dreams.

Chloe fell into a routine. She’d hang out with Stephanie during the day, go hunting for several hours each night, then come home and practice her magic. This part was supposed to be simple. I can get all the other spells to work. The spell that did her dishes was her favorite.

“Come on Chloe! You can do this.” She placed another rose in the center of the circle and sat with her legs crossed. She rested her hands on her knees and slowed her breathing to center herself. Chloe chanted.

The rose lifted off the ground and hovered in the air. Good. Now came the hard part. Chloe took a deep breath and changed the pitch of the chant. The first petal peeled off, then the second. The rose spun out of control. Chloe stopped chanting and scooted back. She watched as the thing took off like a rocket and sped about the room. Finally, it skidded to a stop right in front of her, in the same spot as the last one.

“Ah!” Chloe let out a frustrated yell. She’d been at this same spell for two weeks and still hadn’t mastered it. “Two weeks!” She picked up the blackened stem and threw it against the wall.

Chloe shoved to her feet and stormed out onto her tiny balcony. The air was cool on her face but it didn’t do anything to calm her temper. She grasped the metal railing and glared with anger at the stars.

“What’s wrong with me?”

“Personally, I don’t think anything’s wrong with you … but I don’t think you were asking me.”

Chloe knew that voice. The rich tones could only belong to one being. She turned, and there he was. Long golden blond hair hung loose past his shoulders, the beautiful face, and that body. “You’re here.”

One side of his mouth lifted in a half smile. “Yes, I’m here.”

She stepped forward and placed a hand on his chest. Chloe felt his warm body beneath the t-shirt he wore. “And you’re real.
