3.2.1.4 Orthoferrites

Orthoferrites are represented with MFeO3, where M is one or more rare earth elements. Orthoferrites have an orthorhombic crystal structure and are weakly ferromagnetic in nature. The praseodymium orthoferrite (PrFeO3), lanthanum orthoferrite (LaFeO3), and dysprosium orthoferrite (DyFeO3) are examples of orthoferrite materials. Orthoferrites are used in communication techniques, optical Internet, cathodes in solid oxide fuel cells, catalysts, gas separators, spin valves, magneto-optic materials, sensors of magnetic fields, and electrical circuits [17]. The perovskite structure is shown in Fig. 3.6. Large divalent or trivalent ions (A) occupy the corners of a cube, and small trivalent or tetravalent metal ions (B) occupy the center of the cube. The oxygen ions are situated centrally on the faces of the cube.
