“You should go to jail for this,” Mr. Burns had said to Larry ten years ago.

The man was Larry’s boss at the used car lot where Larry worked. Mr. Burns had called Larry into his tiny office, closed the door and sat down while Larry stood, knowing why he was there, but knowing the old man had no proof of what he was about to charge him with.

“Tell me how you did it,” Mr. Burns said, a scowl on his face, like he couldn’t stand the sight of Larry, even though he had praised Larry for the two years he had worked there, calling him his best salesman.

“How I did what, Mr. Burns?”

“Sold cars off my lot without me knowing, pocketing the money for yourself.”

“I’ve never done that. You have proof I did that?” Larry was very careful. He knew the crime of selling the lowest cost cars to his people in the hood and keeping the money would get back to him, so he was very careful to erase any record of the sold cars’ existence.

Mr. Burns chuckled sadly and shook his head. “You were the most charismatic, resourceful salesman I ever had. You can sell a car to a man with no arms and no legs, but…but you’re a fucking thief, Larry.”

“You have no right to call me that if you can’t prove it.”

“You’re right,” Mr. Burns said, standing and walking around his desk to his office door. “But I have a right to fire you. Get your ass out of my building. If I ever see you again, I’ll make up the proof I need to see you go to jail.”

Larry’s phone vibrated on his nightstand, snatching him out of his dream. He slammed a hand over the phone before it woke Marian, then brought it to his ear. “Hello,” he said, his voice groggy.

“The bitch did it, Bishop!” Tyrell Suggs said. “She went and did it.”

“Did what?” Larry said, turning in the dark to make sure that Marian was indeed asleep. By the tone in Tyrell Suggs’s voice, the news Larry was about to receive was grave, so he was already pulling himself out of bed. He walked out to the hallway.

“She went to the news people.”

“What? How do you know that?”

“It was just on the news. You ain’t see?”

Larry felt as though his heart stopped. He turned back to face the bedroom door panicking, wondering if Marian might have been up long enough to see the news, then quickly went to sleep without telling him. But how could that have happened? He speculated about the tens of thousand of people—many of those being the members of his church. What were they thinking that moment?

His breaths came quickly and he felt dizzy. Larry threw out a hand; it landed against a wall and steadied him.

“Bishop, you there?” Tyrell Suggs asked.

“Yeah, yeah,” I’m here,” Larry said, looking down at the palm full of sweat he pulled from his brow.

“What do you want me to do?”

Larry exhaled deeply, tried his best to gain some form of composure.
