Ferruginous Hawk, Buteo regalis

Family Accipitridae (Hawks, Eagles)

Size: 23", female larger than male

Season: Winter

Habitat: Dry prairies, open country

The Ferruginous Hawk is the largest buteo in the Pacific Northwest. It has a thick body and neck; a large, hooked bill; and long, broad wings. Two color morphs occur: light and dark. The light morph is white below with rufous barring on the flanks and thighs. The back is mottled brown and rufous with grayish flight feathers. The dark morph is dark brown overall but with white on the undersides of the flight feathers and tail. Ferruginous Hawks stalk their prey of small mammals from a perch or by hovering or soaring. The light-morph adult is illustrated.
