15. Hell

etgar turns to wahida.

etgar. What a trip. We left Berlin two hours late and they checked our passports three times upon arrival. Once in the cabin, then when we left the plane and then at customs. You can’t imagine, no barriers, no separate lines, a mob. Two hours to get through. And I have an Israeli passport. The others are still there. If you had seen us, so many people, at least ten planes, it was so crowded. There was one man beside me, my age, we looked at each other and he said: “Are they taking us to the ovens or what?” We laughed. You just have to stick me in the middle of a crowd that can hardly move and I’m back in hell.

wahida. Sorry, I don’t speak German. There’s something I need to tell you, while David and Norah aren’t here: if you want Eitan to wake up, you have to tell him his father’s story. I apologize for being so brutal, but if you want him to heal, you have to tell him the truth. Tell him the truth he has come to find.

etgar. But who are you?

wahida. I am the woman who loves Eitan . . . When he wakes up, tell him not to come looking for me. I’ll come back. Tell him I’ve identified the real issues in my thesis and now I have to resolve them. Tell him that I love him and that I want him to delve deep into his abyss and I’ll try to delve deep into mine.

leah. Just promise me you will stay alive, and most of all, promise you will stop asking for permission.

wahida. Okay, you old witch. I’ve learned my lesson and I’ll follow your advice. I’m going to change my jeans and I’m off to find some big dicks to suck. Goodbye, sir.

wahida exits.

leah. It’s caught up with us, Etgar.

etgar. Give me time to catch my breath.

leah. You’ve had thirty-five years to catch your breath.

etgar. Yes. You always got what you wanted.

leah. Everything. Except the child’s love. Peace of mind. My conscience. What you stole from me. Come now. We’re going to pay our debts.

They enter eitan’s room. Sit down at his bedside. After a long silence, and much muttering, they begin to talk to eitan. The day goes by, planes cross the sky and words are spoken, his, then hers, until day’s end and they have to leave. No reconciliation between them. The words were given as facts.
