Chapter 14

Polly

It had been almost a whole week since I ran into Harlem. So far? Nothing. Radio silence. I was grateful, but confused. As soon as I saw him, I knew, one hundred percent, knew he was going to pull something. Some kind of stalkerish behavior. To Misty’s and my utter amazement, there’d been nothing.

Grizz kept his promise and had at least three guys patrolling the compound day and night. There was also a group of guys who made runs through town looking for him. They had found him a few times, but he was acting normal. Twice, they found him at a restaurant or something grabbing food or a drink. A third time, he was coming out of the grocery store. Nothing sinister or anything. The fact that he was still around continued to unnerve me, but we couldn’t do anything unless he stepped out of line.

Rogue had managed to get into the state parole database to check on his status.

Rogue had pointed to the screen. “See. Right there. He checked in with his parole officer like clockwork. He’s being a really good boy. If that good boy was actually a pile of shit.”

“Right,” Trey said. “What about his online activity? Is he posting anything… I don’t know, threatening? Off the wall? You know?”

Rogue frowned, and said, “I wish. Here let me show you.”

He brought up several of Harlem’s profiles. He made a living as an influencer, so he made sure he had a presence on every major site. Rogue scrolled through his most recent posts. Pictures of him shirtless, putting on suntan lotion by a pool. A video of him doing some crazy workout standing on an inflatable ball doing bicep curls. Then a video advertisement for some brand of protein shake.

“See what I mean? There’s nothing incriminating. Well, other than the fact that,” Rogue leaned in to read the numbers better, “three hundred thousand people follow and watch this douchebag. What is wrong with people? Are sitcoms dead? I mean, I’ve watched Big Bang Theory. Anything is more entertaining than watching this asshat rub lotion on himself. But, to be fair, that's an indictment on the people following him, not our buddy Harlem himself.”

Trey rubbed at his stubble, and said, “So that’s all?”

Rogue leaned back and folded his arms. “I really wanted to find something where he was railing on and on. I’ll kill Misty! I’m gonna kidnap and assault Polly! No dice. We’ve gotta wait and see what he does.”

To me, it felt like a blade was hanging above my head all the time. Ready to fall at a moment, but I didn’t know when. I knew how quickly Harlem could flip the switch. Go from handsome and charming to sadistic and brutal. I was glad to have Trey and his friends around me.

One of the bright spots the whole week was Daisy. I’d fallen hard for that little girl. There was something so sweet and precious about her. After a few days, I could really tell that she did look like Trey.
