Chapter Seven

Jon woke up at first light. When he looked over, he found Channing wrapped snugly in his sleeping bag, with only his hair sticking out the top. Instead of getting up, he stayed in bed, enjoying the cool morning air while thinking he would have another great day in the canyon.

Channing yawned and rolled over. “Hey.”

“Hey.”

“Is there coffee?”

Jon sat up and glanced over at the kitchen. “Not yet.” He snuggled back in. “Give him another ten minutes.”

“I wanted coffee at four.”

“No, no. You’re doing it wrong. You have to demand it.”

“I demand you go back in time and make me coffee at four.”

“There you go.” Jon chuckled. “Now wouldn’t you be surprised if I could actually make that happen?”

“I would be.” Channing groaned.

“What? Sore?”

“No, I have to pee.”

“Go pee in the river.”

“So you can watch?” Under his breath, Channing muttered, “Perv.”

“I have no interest in watching you urinate.”

“No, you just want to see if I have a smooth bottom.”

“Damn. You figured me out.”

Channing fiddled around inside his sleeping bag. “Here.” He handed over the thick socks Jon had put on his feet.

“You can keep them.”

“I want you to put them on me again tonight.”

“I can do that.” Jon rolled them up and tucked them into his ammo can for now. “Okay, if you’re not going to go, I am.” Jon unzipped his bag, checked his shoes, and then pulled them on.

“What were you looking for in there?”

“Scorpions. Ants. A lizard. Anything that might have crawled in during the night.”

“Are you serious?” Channing sat up and glanced around his cot.

“It’s unlikely, but I always take precautions.”

“Good to know.” Channing swung out of his sleeping bag then checked his shoes.

“I’ll be right back.”

“Where are you going?”

“To pee.” Jon went down to the shore and peed then came back. “Did you look at my butt?”

“What little of it I could see.” Under his breath, Channing muttered, “Stingy.”

“Perv.”

“Damn straight.” Channing got up and did the same, only he let Jon see more of his butt, which seemed smooth. Jon sighed happily when he realized he’d find out soon enough.

Together, they walked over to the kitchen.

“Hands,” Stone said quietly.

“Hands?” Channing echoed.

“He wants us to go wash our hands before we touch anything.” Jon washed up at the kitchen hygiene station then helped Stone make coffee.

“Can I do anything?” Channing asked.

“Never ask him that,” Jon warned.

“Too late now.” Stone clapped his hands together then chuckled evilly.

“What have I done?” Channing pressed the back of his hand dramatically against his forehead.

“Nothing so terrible.” Stone had Channing and Loren pull out fruit and bagels for breakfast while he had Jon get the coffee going.

“No hot water for tea?” Jon filled a large soup pan with water then set up the filter and coffee grounds over a large metal coffee decanter. No cowboy coffee on Stone’s watch.

“No tea drinkers.”

“Alistair quit?”

“Says he only drinks water now.”

“Well, good for him.” Jon lowered his voice. “Leaves more beer for the rest of us.”

Stone nodded then had his helpers bring him eggs and precooked bacon.
