MEASURING SUSTAINABILITY

As social media ignites a global conscience, an obvious question for managers to ask themselves is, “How is my business doing?” Share prices and quarterly accounting figures provide sufficient financial metrics, but what about more intangible aspects such as environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles?

In the 2010 series of interviews and surveys conducted by Accenture and the UN, 70 percent of CEOs reported that they are integrating ESG issues into their core business strategies “more” or “much more” than five years ago. It is likely that the temptation for “green-washing,” exaggerated marketing of environmental policies, may have been driving some of the responses. To be fair to the CEOs, it is not easy to navigate the sea of confusion surrounding sustainability; as to date, there is no recognized standard for monitoring or evaluating the ESG principles of a particular company. There are clearly leading lights such as Unilever, PUMA, and Marks & Spencer, which have worked hard at promoting models for sustainable business practices.
